Professional Sump Pump Installation
Sump pumps come in many different designs, installations, and options. A hole dug in the dirt with a sump pump sitting in the hole will technically work, but not for long. A minor improvement is to stick it in a five-gallon bucket. But a professional installation includes a real sump basin that is tall enough to hold enough water to keep from overflowing and deep enough to collect the rising water table. While they do make perforated sump basins, most are drilled on site with enough holes to allow an easy flow of water. Filter fabric, not landscaping fabric, should be wrapped around the basin to keep out sediment. Four to six inches of gravel are installed around the sides and bottom of the basin to provide a path of least resistance for the water to flow into the basin. The basin can also be used to collect water from French drains if they are installed. A high-quality sump pump can require 9 to 10 amps, meaning it can take almost all of the power from an average circuit and usually needs a “home run”, a dedicated breaker added. The discharge from the sump pump cannot be put in your sewage or waste system. Some municipalities prohibit discharging the sump pump water into storm drains. So where do you put it? The official answer is, “somewhere else that is not prohibited”. That usually means in the yard or to the neighborhood drainage swale or ditch.
What Kind of Sump Pump Do You Need?
Sump pumps come in many styles and designs. The cheap ones are usually cheap for a reason, they are not made to last. A quality sump pump will be made with cast iron parts and have a good reputation. If it is critical that your sump pump not fail then you should consider installing a backup pump alongside your main pump. What if your electricity goes out during a storm? You have a couple of options: you can install a battery backup or you can install one that runs on water pressure rather than electricity.
